Women's Basketball Hosts Penn in Big 5 Battle on Thursday

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team can clinch at least a share of the Philadelphia Big 5 title on Thursday when the Owls host cross-town rival, Penn, at 7:00 p.m. Temple, Saint Joseph's, and Villanova are all 2-1 in Big 5 play, while Penn is 1-1 and La Salle is 0-3.

The Owls
Temple is 11-6 overall and 5-2 in the American. The Owls have won eight of their last 10 games.
Most recently, #1 UConn handed the Owls a 104-49 loss in Storrs, Conn.
The Huskies out-shot the Owls, 54.7% to 29.4%, while out-rebounding Temple 48-34.
Sophomore Alliya Butts finished with 12 points, six assists, and three steals, while classmate Khadijah Berger had 11 points and junior Feyonda Fitzgerald had eight points and five assists.
For the year, Butts leads the Owls with 15.5 points per game, while grabbing 46 steals. Fitzgerald is second with 14.9 points per game, averaging a team-high 5.2 assists per game.
Atkinson averages 11.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest, while Fountain (8.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and Covile (8.9 ppg, 6.5 rpg) bolster the Owls on both ends of the floor.

The Quakers
Penn enters the game with an 11-2 overall record, including winning six in a row and 11 of their last 12.
Last time out, Penn outscored La Salle 27-12 in the second quarter, en route to a 78-68 victory.
Sydney Stipanovich led the Quakers with a double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds, also tallying six blocks. Kasey Chambers notched a career-best 18 points with eight rebounds and six assists.
For the season, Michelle Nwokedi leads the Quakers with 14.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, while Stipanovich also nearly averages a double-double with 13.8 points and 9.2 rebounds. Anna Ross adds 9.2 points per game to the Penn offense, and is their leading three-point threat.

Temple vs. Penn
Temple and Penn have met 67 times, with the Owls owning a 50-17 series record.
The Owls and the Quakers split a pair of meetings last year. Penn grabbed a 52-50 win at home in January during the regular season, but Temple won 61-56 at Penn in the second round of the WNIT.
Last time they met,Alliya Butts hit a go-ahead three with 3:04 to play and Feyonda Fitzgerald scored the final 10 points of the game, as Temple defeated Penn at the Palestra.
Fitzgerald finished the game with a team-high 16 points, going 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minute of play. Butts ended with 12 points, while junior Erica Covile had nine points and a team-high 13 rebounds, while also adding five steals and three assists.
For the Quakers, Nwokedi notched a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, also adding three blocks and three assists. Stipanovich finished with 13 points, but just five in the second half, while also adding five boards and five assists.
