10.15.16 | Women's Rowing
PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's rowing team opened the 2016-17 season with eight top-10 finishes at the Navy Day Regatta on Saturday. Highlighting the Schuylkill River action for the Owls was a win in the freshman four race.
In the last race of the day for the Owls, Temple topped the 14-boat field in the freshman four event. The Owls "A" boat finished the race in a time of 17:44.37, 13 seconds faster than second-place Lehigh. Temple also took fourth in the event, as the "B" boat clocked in at 18:52.89.
"I think we came in with some high expectations and we're at a point where we're disappointed when we don't reach them," said head coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski. "Some of the results today were a Iittle disappointing, but overall it was a good day of learning, and a great cherry on top for the freshman four to get a win. We're a young team and there's a lot of work that still needs to be done. We can make some substantial strides over the next few months, which is what we plan to do."
In varsity eight races, Temple took sixth place in a deep field. The Owls recorded a time of 15:11.28 in the 26-boat race. The JV eight also raced well, finished eighth of 16 in their event, clocking in at 15:49.11.
The Owls had a pair of boats in the varsity four race, taking fourth and 11th in the 23-boat field. The varsity four finished in 16:27.29, while the second varsity four recorded a 16:57.24.
Temple's freshman eight also had a solid race, taking fourth out of 16 teams. The Owls finished in 16:05.48.
In pairs racing, the Owls had two boats competing, as Lea Millio and Charlotte Forman took third place (17:47.75) and Emilie Mehler and Emma Alford took fourth (18:43.5).
Temple is back in action with three boats competing at next weekend's Head of the Charles Regatta.
