BEALLSVILLE, Md. - Sophomore Trey Wren tied the competitive course record at The Members Club at Four Streams with a five-under 66 in the opening round of the 32nd Annual Georgetown Intercollegiate Monday and then finished up the day with a two-over 73 to lead Temple golf and tied for fifth overall. The Owls, like Wren, were tied for the lead after the morning 18, but sit in eighth place in the 12-team field following the afternoon round.
"Trey was in a zone in the morning, and followed that with a solid afternoon round," said Temple head coach Brian Quinn. "Overall it was a great day for Temple golf. Our young men got a glimpse of how good we can be, and how good I think we will be as we mature as a team."
Wren, whose previous best round was a 69 at the Furman Intercollegiate last spring, now is tied for the fifth best single round in Temple golf history, Walter Brown, who shot a 63 at the Yale Invitational in 1973, owns the record with Brandon Matthews' 64 at the 2012 The McLaughlin ranking second. Two other Owls, Jon Rush (2002 Princeton Invitational) and Mike Amole (2013 The Doc Glimmer) each carded 65s.
With Wren leading the way, Temple was in a three-way tie with Notre Dame and Eastern Michigan with an even-par 284 after the morning round. The young Cherry and White squad fell off the pace in the afternoon, combining for a 13-over 297 to sit in eighth. Temple is only four shots from fourth place and 21 behind the Fighting Irish (-8).
Junior Mark Farley, the team's lone upperclassmen in the event, shot a three-over 145 (72-73) to tie for 22nd overall. Sophomore Sam Soeth, who has been the Owls' top golfer in the fall, was two strokes back (71-76) and tied for 30th with a 147.
Redshirt freshmen Erik Reisner (75-75, 150) and redshirt sophomore John Barone (79-77, 156) rounded out the squad in 41st and 55th place, respectively.
Notre Dame's Ben Albin, who also shot a 66 in the morning round, leads the 67-player field with an eight-under 134.Â
The Irish are in first place with an eight-under 560. They are followed by Georgetown (564), Eastern Michigan (567), DePaul (577), Princeton (577), William and Mary (579), Rhode Island (580), Temple (581), Navy (590), Towson (597), Florida Atlantic (612) and Saint Joseph's (621).
The Georgetown Intercollegiate concludes Tuesday with 18 holes.
