Strong Finish Helps Golf Place Sixth at Georgetown Intercollegiate
10.18.16 | Men's Golf
BEALLSVILLE, Md. – After struggling over the first nine holes at 22-over par, the Temple Golf team caught fire down the stretch, shooting nine-under over the final nine to place sixth at the 12-team Georgetown Intercollegiate Tuesday. Sophomore Trey Wren, who tied the competitive course record at The Members Club at Four Streams on Monday with a five-under 66 in the opening round, led the way, with a four-under 209 to place fourth overall among the 67 competitors.
Wren epitomized the day for the Owls. The Suffolk, Va. native started his final round by shooting five over par for his first seven holes. He then turned it around, shooting six-under over his last 11 for a one-under 70 on the day.
"As good as Trey was on his opening round Monday, today was a better day for him," said Temple coach Brian Quinn. "To overcome that start, and come back the way he did, that showed me a lot. It was a great round for him.
Today really showed me a lot about our young team, to fight back after that start, and to finish as strong as we did, validates my feelings on how good we are capable of becoming."
Wren, who posted his best finish of his young career, was followed by junior Mark Farley, who shot a three-over 74 for his final round to tie for 21st with a six-over 219. Redshirt freshman Erik Reisner, who carded a one-over 72, was third for the Owls and tied for 32nd overall with a nine-over 222. Sophomore Sam Soeth was next with a 225 to tie for 40th while redshirt sophomore John Barone, who posted a 73 for his final round, tied for 50th with a 229.
Notre Dame's Ben Albin won the individual title with an 11-under 202.
The Irish won the team title with an 846. They were followed by Georgetown (858), DePaul (861), Rhode Island (861), Eastern Michigan (862), Temple (870), Princeton (872), William and Mary (873), Navy (884), Florida Atlantic (903), Towson (905) and Saint Joseph's (919).
Temple next competes at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on October 27-29.
