Men's Soccer Resumes Conference Play With Home Match Against Tulsa

10.21.16 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – With three games remaining in the 2016 season, Temple men's soccer has only conference opponents left on its match schedule. On Saturday, the Owls welcome Tulsa for a 7 p.m. game crucial for advancement on the road to the American Athletic Conference tournament.

The Owls will enter Saturday's game following a 2-1 victory over the Delaware Blue Hens on Tuesday. Jorge Gomez Sanchez matched his 2015 single-season goals record of 13 when he knocked in the first goal of the game in the 10th minute of play.

Gomez Sanchez also remains the current national leader in total goals with 13. Within the program records, Gomez Sanchez currently ranks in a tie for sixth all-time with 26 goals across his career as an Owl.

After an equalizer from the Blue Hens in the opening minutes of the first half, Matt Mahoney was able to post his first goal of the season and secure the Owls' victory with a mid-air boot in the 78th minute. Mahoney now ranks third on the team in total points with a goal and two assists.

Currently, the Owls stand in a tie for third in the American Athletic Conference with a record of 1-2-1. UConn, Cincinnati and USF all hold 3-1 records to share the top spot heading into this weekend's conference match-ups.

With their overall record of 9-5-1, the Owls are one win shy of tallying the seventh 10-win season under head coach David MacWilliams. It would also be the fourth 10-win season in the past five years.

The Matchup…
The Golden Hurricane have faced off with the Owls only twice in the programs' histories. Tulsa leads the short series with two wins and took the 2015 match 2-0 at home.

Entering Saturday's match, the Golden Hurricane holds a 7-4-3 overall record with a 2-2 conference record. Their last outing ending in a 3-3 double-overtime draw against Oral Roberts.

Freshman Matthew Puig is the team's leading goal scorer with five in his first season with the Golden Hurricane. He was recently named Rookie of the Week by the conference after tallying two goals in two wins against Creighton and UCF last week.
