10.31.16 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – After booting in his 14th goal of the season in overtime to top UCF, Jorge Gomez Sanchez has been selected to the American Athletic Conference's weekly honor roll. From the Philadelphia Soccer Six, Gomez Sanchez was selected as the Player of the Week alongside goalkeeper Alex Cagle who earned Defensive Player of the Week.
The honor marks the fifth of the season for Gomez Sanchez, who has been on the honor roll once before and was named the Offensive Player of the Week on three separate occasions. The Soccer Six honor stands as his fourth of the season.
The goal marked a new personal best for Gomez Sanchez in terms of single-season goals. Last season, the senior knocked in 13 goals throughout the entirety of the season. With his current mark, Gomez Sanchez stands alone in fifth place all-time in program history for single-season goals and has tied his points mark of 31 to combine for a total of 62 career points that ranks ninth all-time.
Cagle posted a crucial save in the second half of the Owls' lone match of the week to avoid dropping to UCF. The redshirt-junior now boasts eight shutouts for 2016 and nine overall with team shutouts included.
Gomez Sanchez and Cagle now look to the Owls' final regular season match against USF, who clinched the American Athletic Conference regular season champions' title after topping SMU 1-0 on Saturday.
