Men's Soccer Hits the Road for Conference Match at SMU
10.7.16 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Kicking off a three-game road series, the Owls are set for their third conference opponent in the SMU Mustangs tomorrow night at 8 p.m. ET in Dallas. Temple looks to secure its first conference victory at Westcott Field against a Mustang team that is currently 0-2 in conference play.
The Owls hit the road following a third consecutive shutout against city-rival Villanova on Tuesday. Jorge Gomez Sanchez knocked in his eleventh goal of the season to mark a final score of 1-0. Now tied for first in the nation for total goals, the senior looks to continue his momentum against conference opponents.
Alex Cagle, who enters the weekend as the reigning American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, currently holds a goals against average of 0.63 that ranks second in the conference and 21st in the nation. If the average holds, Cagle will become the Owls all-time leader single-season goals against average.
Currently, former Owls Dan Scheck grabbed the top spot after posting a goals against average in 2013 of .67.
Overall, the Owls are two shutouts away from matching the program record for most consecutive shutouts. The current record of five was set in 1959.
The Matchup…
Saturday's game will be the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools. Last year, the Mustangs went unbeaten in conference play with a 7-0-1 record that earned them regular-season champion honors.
The Owls fell to the Mustangs in last year's meeting, 2-0, and have yet to record a win against SMU in the all-time series (0-2-1).
Currently, the Mustangs hold a 4-7 overall record and a 0-2 record in the conference with losses to Tulsa and UCF. Mauro Chicero and Brenden Lee lead the team in scoring with three goals each. Lee's goals came all at once, marking a hat trick for the midfielder against Incarnate Word.
