News & Notes Following Temple's 34-10 Win at Navy...
Temple has won the American Athletic Conference Championship. It was the first Championship game victory in school history and just the second time that Temple won a conference championship (1967, Middle Atlantic Conference).
Temple beat a ranked opponent (#19 Navy) for just the fifth time but the third time in the last three seasons. They beat a ranked opponent on the road for just the third time and first since October 17, 1998 at Virginia Tech.
In the past two seasons, Temple has won 20 games. It is the best two-year stretch in school history. Temple won 17 games in a two-year span four times (1973-74, 1978-79, 2009-10, 2010-11).
Temple has won 10 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time ever. In fact, Temple has won 10 games for just the third time (1979, 2015, 2016).
Temple's senior class now has 28 wins in the last 3+ seasons which ranks tied for third all-time in school history over a four-year span. However, with one game remaining, this year's class has a chance to move into sole possession of third all-time [31 wins (2011), 30 (2012), 28 (1931, 1974, 1975)].
Temple will play in a bowl game for the sixth time in school history and the first time they will go in consecutive seasons. Temple is bowl eligible for the third year in a row and sixth time in eight years.
QB Phillip Walker earned the game's Most Outstanding Player Award after leading the Owls to touchdowns on their first three drives and finished the day with 199 yards and two touchdowns on 16-of 25 passing. The fourth year signal caller has started 46 consecutive games for the Owls and is the school's all-time leader in attempts (1,410), completions (801), passing yards (10,273), touchdowns (73), total offense (11,100), and wins by a starting quarterback (28).
The game was a complete team effort as four different players scored touchdowns (two rushing – RBs Ryquell Armstead and Jahad Thomas – and two receiving – Ventell Bryant and Keith Kirkwood). Nine different players made at least four tackles led by MLB Jarred Alwan's 13. Five different players took part in the team's 3.0 sacks.
Temples' defense limited the Navy offense to 10 points and 306 total yards. Navy came into the game scoring 141 points in its last two contests and held season averages of 41.7 PPG and 470.0 YPG. Â
DC Phil Snow entered the game saying Temple needed to win third and long situations. Navy converted on just 1-of-7 third down tries of five-or-more yards and were 6-of-14 overall.
Temple has now allowed just 20 points in its last four games and improved its scoring defense to 17.2 PPG – 8th best in the country. The defense is ranked in the top 10 in total defense (3rd – 275.9), passing yards allowed (2nd – 145.2), red zone defense (6th – 72.4), first downs (10th – 193), and fumbles recovered (5th – 13).
