Men's Tennis Continues Streak, Defeats Quinnipiac 6-1

2.28.16 | Men's Tennis

PHILADELPHIA – Another strong performance helped lift the Temple men's tennis team to a 6-1 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday night. The win moved the Owls to 11-1 overall and gave them their ninth-straight victory on the season.

"The guys played a tremendous match today against a tough opponent. We knew that Quinnipiac was having a successful season and we were short-handed, since our number one player was out with the flu. The guys really all really rebounded and played great in doubles to win the point and then five of their singles matches," said head coach Steve Mauro. "Nicolas Paulus had a really great set at number two today, winning in straight-sets. The guys have been working really hard this season; it's really been a pleasure to coach them. They're doing all the right things and they're having a really successful season."

The Owls were able to get on the board first by clinching the doubles point. Hicham Belkssir and Vineet Naran took a 6-4 win over Jonas Kuwert and Willen van Biezen, while Uladzimir Dorash and Florian Mayer defeated Kei Ezaka and Kyle Alper, 6-4 at the third flight.

In singles, freshman Artem Kapshuk took over the number one flight, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ezaka; so far this season, Kapshuk is 9-0 in dual play. At the fourth flight, Mayer took down Kuwert, 6-3, 6-2, while classmate Dorash defeated Julian Rozestein, 6-4, 6-3 at the third flight.

At the second flight, Paulus picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victor over Freddie Zaretsky to mark his 61st career singles victory at Temple. This ties him for second for most careers wins in records kept since 2001 with Mansur Giskaev and Dmitry Vizhunov. Belkssir rounded out the wins for the Owls with a 6-2, 3-6, 12-10 win at the fifth flight over van Biezen.

The Owls will head out on the road to face American Athletic Conference opponent SMU on March 2.
