BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Temple women's track and field team will return to Philadelphia with an American Athletic Conference champion. Freshman Sylvia Wilson competed in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles on Monday afternoon, running a time of 8.40 seconds to take first place overall in the event. The second day of championship competition for the Owls also saw three personal records and two top-five finishes.
Across both days of competition, the Owls garnered 44 total team points that was enough to take eighth out of the 11 total teams in the conference. This is the highest conference finish for the Owls since their entry into the American Athletic Conference.
"I think our freshman really made their presence felt these past two days," said head coach Elvis Forde. "Crystal and Sylvia contributed nearly half the points for the weekend and all the competitors put themselves in contention for points. That is what impressed me the most and I could not have been happier."
Kicking off day two was freshman Crystal Jones who competed in the high jump after placing fifth overall in the pentathlon on Sunday. Jones was able to hit a mark of 1.72 meters to place fourth overall.
Both junior Simone Chapman and senior Sydnee Jacques were able to post personal-best marks in the triple jump. Chapman posted an 11.92-meter jump that landed her in ninth place overall. Jacques made a huge jump to hit her personal-best mark of 12.15 meters that ranked fifth in the finals.
The 3000-meter race was the final individual event for the Owls on day two. Sophomore Katie Pinson improved her previous personal-record by more than 30 seconds with a time of 10:10.15. Her time was the second-fastest in her heat and ranked 15th overall.
To close out the weekend, the team of freshman Aliya Sharp, junior Bionca St. Fleur, junior Kenya Gaston, and freshman Maya Halprin-Adams represented the Owls in the 4x400-meter relay. The team ran a time of 3:43.16 to take fourth overall. This time also stands as the fastest 4x400-meter relay mark for the Owls in 2016.
"This is the direction I want the program to go in," said Coach Forde. "I hope that what these athletes did this weekend stands as a benchmark for the entire program. Overall, seeing the joy of the team following everyone's success was the most important thing and I was proud of the way this weekend went for everyone."
