Women's Basketball Cruises in School Day Win over SMU

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's basketball team cruised to a 55-35 victory over visiting SMU on Wednesday afternoon at the Liacouras Center. The win, the third-straight for the Owls, lifts Temple to 14-7 overall, 8-2 in The American, while SMU dipped to 9-12, 4-6 in conference play.
The Owls allowed a season-low 35 points to the Mustangs, also the lowest opponent total since Temple beat Kent State, 68-33, on December 6, 2011. The win was also the 14th-straight for Temple on its annual "School Day" game, where students from local schools are on hand to watch the noon tip-off.
Sophomore Donnaizha Fountain led the Owls with 14 points, also adding seven rebounds and three steals, while senior Erica Covile had 13 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Junior Feyonda Fitzgerald had eight points and a pair of assists, while sophomore Alliya Butts had six points, five steals, and four assists. Rounding out the box score, sophomore Khadijah Berger had six points and seven rebounds.
Temple's defense was the story of the first quarter, as the Owls held the Mustangs to just four points on 2-of-12 (16.7%). On offense, Temple shot 35% from the field to end the quarter with a 14-4 advantage.
The Owls opened the second quarter on an 8-4 run to take their largest lead of the game at 23-8. SMU answered with a 7-0 run, including back-to-back Froling threes to cut the lead to 23-15. Temple was able push its advantage back to double figures, however, closing the quarter with a 7-2 surge, making it 30-17.
Butts, Fitzgerald, Fountain, and Berger all had six first half points for Temple, while Covile had four points and four steals. Alicia Froling led SMU with four points, as Temple forced 18 Mustang turnovers.
The third quarter was again all Temple, as the Owls out-scored SMU, 17-4. The Temple lead ballooned to 26 by the end of the frame, as a Fitzgerald lay-up put Temple up 49-23 after three quarters.
The Owls increased the advantage to 28 (53-25) in the fourth quarter, before emptying the bench. SMU was able to close the game on a 10-2 run, but the Temple lead was too great, and the Owls finished out their second-straight 20-point victory.
Temple is back in action on Saturday, hosting #19/17 USF at the Liacouras Center at 2:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast by ESPN3. Fans can stick around after the game for a postgame autograph session with the Owls.
