Lacrosse's Seven-Game Win Streak Snapped by Delaware

3.16.16 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA - Delaware used a big second half to snap a seven-game win streak for Temple lacrosse, handing the Owls a 10-4 home loss on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Hens (8-1) got three goals and two assists from Casey Lyons, and broke open what was a tie game at halftime.

Both defenses were impenetrable early on, and neither team was able to score for close to 14 minutes to start the game. Temple's Nicole Tiernan was awarded a free-position opportunity at 16:23 of the first half, and made it count for a 1-0 lead.

Twin sister Megan Tiernan gave the Owls a 2-0 advantage five minutes later, sprinting down the field after a clear pass from goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik, but the Blue Hens then rattled off three straight including two from Lyons.

With 4:23 left in the first half, Brooke Williams made it a tie game for the Owls, and the 3-3 score stood through halftime.

Delaware put two goals on the board in the opening four minutes of the second half, and a third in the 10th minute of the period for a 6-3 lead. Temple got one back on an unassisted goal for Morgan Glassford, but it would be the Owls' last of the game.

Four different players scored for the Blue Hens in the final 17 minutes, and Delaware goalkeeper Taylor Carpentier stopped both shots that came her way in that stretch. She finished with eight saves in the cage to record the win, while Kakalecik made nine for Temple including seven in the first half.

"This was the slowest pace in a game we've played yet," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "Our offensive play was very stagnant, which was a little bit having to do with the zone that Delaware plays. It was very effective against us and I don't think we adjusted well to it. The pace of the game left us unsettled in our play, and that built throughout the whole game."

Temple will have a big break to make adjustments before getting back on the field. The Owls' next game is once again at home, but not until Saturday, March 26 when the Owls face California at noon.
