Lacrosse Hosts Cal on Saturday to Close Out Non-Conference Season

PHILADELPHIA - Temple lacrosse closes out its non-conference season on Saturday by hosting the California Golden Bears at noon. The Owls (7-2) start BIG EAST play on April 2, traveling to #2 Florida.

Temple's contest against the Golden Bears is also the last in a four-game homestand, but the Owls will play four of seven league games at home as well. Temple recently won seven in a row, its longest win streak in 14 years, before falling 10-4 to Delaware on March 16. Temple won five of those seven games by 10 or more goals, with the Owls' most recent win being a 16-4 defeat of city rival Saint Joseph's on March 12. Temple's 19-goal effort in a 19-9 win at UMBC was the most since a 19-3 win over Cincinnati in 2014. 

Senior Rachel Schwaab leads Temple with 19 goals and 12 assists for 31 total points (14th in the nation). Senior Megan Tiernan is close behind with 18 goals and 10 assists for 28 points. Tiernan has notched four hat tricks already this season, while Schwaab has three. Senior Kirstie Connor ranks third on the team with 14 goals, and senior Brenda McDermott is fourth in goals with 13 but third in total points with 24.

In all, 11 players have scored three or more goals for Temple, and 12 hat tricks have already been recorded by the Owls. In their 19-9 win at UMBC on March 5, McDermott scored five straight goals in the first half. She finished with a career-high five in the game, the most for any Owl so far this season.

Senior goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik has played every minute in the cage, making 58 saves while allowing 59 goals for a save percentage of .496 to rank third in the BIG EAST. She ranks sixth in the nation with a goals-against average of 6.56.

Junior midfielder Morgan Glassford, twice named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll already this season, has scored 13 goals to tie fo fourth on the team, and her 44 draw controls lead the Owls. Her 4.89 draws per game lead all players in the BIG EAST and rank 12th in the nation.

As a team, Temple is sixth in NCAA Division I in scoring defense, allowing just 6.56 goals per game, and sixth in the nation with a scoring margin of 6.67.  The Owls' offense is 14th nationally with 13.22 goals per game, and 16th in the nation with 18.44 points per game. The Owls rank first in the BIG EAST in draw controls per game (13.00) and goals-against average (6.56) and second in goals per game (13.22).

The Owls and the Golden Bears are meeting for just the third time, with Cal holding a 2-0 lead in the series. The losses came in back-to-back seasons, 2008 and 2009. Cal is 3-5 overall to start the season, and is coming off a 12-4 loss at Cornell on Wednesday.
