3.23.16 | Women's Gymnastics
DANBURY, Conn. – Following the conclusion of the 2016 season, the Eastern College Athletic Conference announced its selections for the Women's Gymnastics All-Academic Team on Wednesday afternoon. Six members of Temple's gymnastics team have earned spots on the team based on their academic performances.
Sahara Gipson, Kelsey Miller, Kerry Arone, Hannah Popper, Sophia Valeri, and Breahna Wiczkowski have all been named to the All-Academic team for the 2016 season. To be eligible, student-athletes must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher for the Fall 2015 semester.
This is Popper's second season being named to the All-Academic team. As a biology and pre-med major, Popper was also named to the team in 2015. The team's co-captain will be graduating in May.
Outside of their impressive contributions in the classroom, Gipson and Wiczkowski were key competitors at every meet in 2016. Gipson, a strategic communication major, posted GPA of 3.5 in the Fall. She went on to perform as an all-around competitor at every meet, tallying season-high scores of 9.8 on vault, 9.75 on bars, 9.725 on beam, 9.775 on floor, and 38.675 in the all-around.
Wiczkowski, who is majoring in social work with a minor in cognitive neuroscience, was a consistent lead-off performer on bars and beam for the Owls. Wiczkowkski tallied season-high scores of 9.725 on bars and 9.7 on beam in her debut season.
Arone, sports management, and Valeri, athletic training, earned their top marks in the classroom while seeing action in a few meets this season. Both battling injury, Arone was able to compete all-around at the Owls' first two meets of the season. Valeri earned a top mark on the bars of 9.675 at Ithaca College, where she placed first overall.
Miller, a therapeutic recreation major, collected a 4.0 GPA in her first collegiate semester.
The University of Pennsylvania placed the highest number of student-athletes on the team with 18 out of the 72 total team members. For a full listing of the ECAC All-Academic Team, click here.
