PRINCETON, N.J.- Freshman Trey Wren led Temple Golf for the second straight day, carding a three-over 145 to tie for 20th overall at the 30th Annual Princeton Invitational Sunday. Wren's play helped the Owls finish 12th at the 15-team Invitational held at the 6,415-yard, par-71 Springdale Country Club.
Freshman Gary McCabe was next for the young Owls, placing six strokes back of Wren to tie for 48th overall with a nine-over 151. Redshirt freshman John Barone had the second best round of the day for the Temple quintet, a three-over 74, to finish one shot back of McCabe and tied for 54th overall with a 152.Â
Freshman Sam Soeth, playing as an independent, shot an even par 71 to finish tied for 29th with a five-over 147.
"I am really proud of my young guys today," said Temple head coach Brian Quinn. "Trey played really well as did Sam. John and Mark hung in there as well as the conditions were tough."
Senior All-American Brandon Matthews struggled for the second straight day, shooting a five-over 76 to finish 11-over to tie for 59th overall. It was the worst finish in his brilliant four-year career. Sophomore Mark Farley also carded a 76 on his final round, tying for 63rd overall with a 12-over 154.
Duke won the Invitational with a 543, 34 strokes better than Harvard (577). The Blue Devils' Alex Smalley won the title with an eight under 134, one shot better than his teammates, Max Greyserman and Jake Shuman, who finished tied for second with 135s.
The Owls next compete at the American Athletic Conference Championship, May 1-3 at the Quarry Course at Black Diamond in LeCanto, Fla.
