PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's tennis team moved one game closer to a back-to-back undefeated home season with a 7-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon at TU Pavilion. The Owls move to 19-5 overall on the season.
The Owls were able to sweep doubles play, as Santiago Canete and Artem Kapshuk defeated Adam Chan and Kiran Mani, 6-4 at the third flight before Uladzimir Dorash and Florian Mayer clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at the second flight over Pedor Carvalho and Diogo Garnel. Hicham Belkssir and Vineet Naran also picked up a 7-5 win over Jacob Whalley and Gonzalo Quintana at the first flight.
Singles play was also a sweep for Temple. Kapshuk picked up his team-leading 17th dual victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the first flight over Chan, while senior Nicolas Paulus picked up his 69th career win at the fourth flight, defeating Carvalho 6-4, 6-1. Dorash took a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory at the third flight over Quintana to help clinch the win for the Owls.
Mayer picked up a win at the sixth flight over William Bourne, 6-2, 6-4 while two seniors fought hard at their flights for Temple's last two points. Belkssir faced off against Garnel at the fifth flight, taking the first set 6-0 and fell in the second set, 6-2. After falling behind 3-0 in the tiebreaker, Belkssir was able to come back to take the set, 6-3. Canete was also caught in a three-set battle at the first flight with Whalley, but ultimately took the win 6-3, 5-7, 10-7.
"It was a great effort today, the guys played with a lot of heart and beat a tough FDU team," said head coach Steve Mauro. "I was extremely happy for all the senior who I have been very fortunate to have coached for the last four years."
The Owls will close out their regular season with a City Six match against Drexel on April 13 at 3:30 p.m. at TU Pavilion.
