LECANTO, Fla. - The Brandon Matthews Era comes to a close for Temple Golf this weekend when the Owls compete in the American Athletic Conference Championship at Black Diamond Ranch. The three-day event, hosted by The American and USF, will take place this Sunday through Tuesday, May 1-3.

Matthews, who is one of the top golfers in school history, has won a school-record-tying eight individual titles in his four years at Temple.  He has competed as an at-large entry in the last two NCAA Tournaments, and set the Temple record for season stroke average (70.9) in 2015.

The DuPont, Pa, native leads a young Temple team with a 73.0 stroke average.  Matthews will be joined at the conference championship by one sophomore and three first-year golfers.  Freshman Trey Wren ranks second on the Owls with a 75.5 stroke average.  Redshirt freshman John Barone, who tied Wren for the team lead in rounds played (25), is next with a 76.3 average.  Sophomore Mark Farley is right behind Barone with a 76.6 average over 10 rounds while freshman Gary McCabe (78.1) rounds out the Temple quintet.

Play on the par-72, 7,025-yard Quarry Course will begin at 8 a.m. ET with 18 holes each of the three days. An awards presentation will take place following the final round on Tuesday. Admission to the event is free and open to the public, and live scoring can be found through www.Golfstat.com or on the Golfstat mobile applications.

The event will feature nine American teams, three of which are ranked among the nation's top-40 according to the latest Golfstat rankings announced on April 26. USF is the league's highest-rated team at No. 15 while Houston and Memphis check-in at No. 35 and No. 39, respectively.

Individually, Tigers senior Thomas Perrot and UCF sophomore Manuel Elvira lead The American with two wins each. Memphis junior Lars van Meijel is tops in the league with four top-5 finishes this season.

The Bulls won last year's championship by 13 strokes over second-place SMU while individual champion Ryan Fricker (USF) carded an 11-under 205 to earn medalist honors.
