Varsity Eight Bronze Highlights Final Day of Dad Vail for Men's Crew

PHILADELPHIA -- Temple's varsity eight boat took home a bonze medal, highlighting Owl action at the 2016 Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday. It was the last Schuylkill event for long-time head coach, Dr. Gavin White, who announced he will retire at the end of the season.Â
The Owls' varsity eight opened the day with a second place finish in the semifinals. Temple was just off the pace of FIT (5:47.554), recording a time of 5:50.562. The Owls out-distanced Purdue, North Carolina, Ithaca, and UMass-Lowell in the semi.
In the finals, FIT (5:55.410) again came out on top, followed by Drexel (5:58.419) and Temple (6:05.636) on the podium. The bronze medal finish marked the first Temple medal in the varsity eight event since 2008. The stacked field also saw Michigan (6:08.109) take fourth, followed bye Virginia (6:10.395) and Army (6:10.406).Â
Two other Temple boats advanced to the grand finals in their events, the lightweight four and the novice eight. In the lightweight four semis, Temple took second in 6:45.083. In the finals, the Owls landed fifth overall, behind Virginia (7:23.496), Delaware (7:28.455), Fordham (7:31.135), and Michigan (7:31.456). Temple clocked in at 7:38.456, ahead of Lafayette in 7:44.009.Â
In novice eight racing, the Owls took second in their semifinal in 6:15.875, just behind Michigan's time of 6:13.889. In the finals, the Owls finished sixth overall in a stacked field, as just over 10 seconds separated the second through sixth place finishers. Temple's final time was 7:00.570.Â
Three other Temple crews competed on day two of the event, the novice four, Brendan Mason in the men's single, and the Owls' second varsity eight.Â
In the novice four semifinal, Temple finished third in the semifinal, just behind Colgate (7:02.837) and Delaware (7:06.194). The Owls finished in 7:11.777, ahead of Bowdoin, Purdue, and Virginia.
Mason concluded his first Dad Vail in the semifinals as well. He notched a fifth-place finish in 8:12.587.Â
The Owls second varsity eight boat suffered an equipment malfunction in their semifinal, finishing sixth.Â
