Women's Rowing Wins Three Medals, Places Third at The American Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Temple women's rowing team placed a program-best third overall at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at Lake Natoma.
Temple grabbed gold medals in both the third varsity four and third varsity eight races, while also finishing in third, fourth, and fifth places in the NCAA qualifying events (varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four).
In the NCAA events, Temple took grabbed a bronze medal in the varsity eight, also taking fourth in the varsity four and fifth in the second varsity eight race. The varsity eight's third-place finish was the best for the Owls in the event at the American Athletic Conference Championships.
Opening the day, the Owls third varsity four held off a late charge from San Diego State to win gold in the event. In the second varsity four, Temple finished fourth overall.
Temple's third varsity eight then took home the second gold medal of the day for the Owls. The crew topped the six-team field, holding strong against a charging Tulsa boat.
In the varsity four event, Temple took fourth place in a tight field that was led by UCF. The second varsity eight race again saw UCF take top honors, while Temple finished fifth overall.
In the final race of the day, the Owls' first varsity eight used a furious sprint finish to take home the program's first ever medal in the event. UCF took top honors, followed by Tulsa and Temple in the seven-team field.
In team scoring, Temple finished with 149 points, a new Owl record at the event. UCF grabbed top honors with 213 points, followed by Tulsa with 183 and Temple with 149. Sacramento State took fourth place with 141 points, while San Diego State was fifth with 128 points. UConn (101) and SMU (48) rounded out the field.
