5.15.16 | Women's Track and Field
ORLANDO, Fla. – The final day of competition at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships brought out the best in Temple track & field. In her final outdoor conference meet, Blanca Fernandez picked up two individual event titles in the 1500-meter and 5000-meter races. This brings Fernandez's individual titles total to six through just three semesters as an Owl.
In the 1500-meter race, where Fernandez took home the title at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, the graduate student clocked a time of 4:26.60 to edge out SMU's Holly Archer for the top spot.
Just a few hours later, Fernandez took the track for the jam-packed 5000-meter race. Her winning time of 16:14.62 marked a new personal, program and stadium record at the UCF Soccer and Track Stadium. For her efforts, Fernandez has earned a qualification to the NCAA Regional in Jacksonville, Fla.
Freshman Crystal Jones had an impressive day taking the silver in the high jump. Her mark of 1.73 meters matched first place finisher, Diayja Sheppard of Houston, but was separated by just one attempt at the jump. Amidst her high jump performance, Jones also participated in the 400-meter hurdle finals where she ran a 1:07.84 to take eighth.
Sylvia Wilson and Sydnee Jacques also competed the finals of their respective events. Wilson posted a time of 13.99 in the 100-meter hurdles at her first outdoor championships to place seventh. Jacques set a season-best outdoor triple jump mark with a jump of 12.13 meters that placed ninth in the finals.
The 4x100-meter relay also set a seasons-best time for the outdoor season. The team of Bionca St. Fleur, Kenya Gaston, Aliya Sharp, and Sylvia Wilson clocked in a time of 46.41 in their heat.
As a team, the Owls collected a total of 37 points to take ninth overall.
