Blanca Fernandez Qualifies for NCAA Final Track & Field Outdoor Championships, Breaks Own 5000m Record
5.28.16 | Women's Track and Field
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second year in a row, Blanca Fernandez has qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Her performance at the NCAA East Preliminary meet in the 5000-meter run earned her a third place finish with a time of 16:09.84. Fernandez's time also marks a new school record, topping her own time of 16:14.62 set at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Finals.
"I know she is excited," said head coach Elvis Forde. " I commend her and coach Snyder who have made it happen again. We are looking forward to the championships and it's another bright spot for our program".
Last season, Fernandez qualified for the outdoor championships in the 1500-meter run where she fell just short of the final with a 15th place finish overall. Next week, Fernandez will be vying for a first-team All-American honors with a finish in the top eight.
Despite missing the majority of the indoor season with injury, Fernadez has boomed back in the outdoor season, winning two events at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.
"Her early injury may have hurt us during the indoor season, " said coach Forde. "Her rest may make her a lot fresher compared to the other athletes she will compete against next week, however".
Fernandez will return to the track in Eugene, Ore. The first day of competition will be Wednesday, June 8.
