Blanca Fernandez's Final Meet Ends with an 11th Place Finish at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – The second national performance for Blanca Fernandez earned her another second-team All-American title to bring home to North Broad. In the women's 5,000-meter final at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Fernandez clocked in a time of 16:17.03 to place 11th overall.
"We are very proud of her performance today," said head coach Elvis Forde. "All the respect goes out to all the athletes in the field, as well."
Arkansas' Dominique Scott took the gold in the event with a time of 15:57.07.
Saturday's race wrapped up a record-breaking outdoor season for Fernandez, where she collected two individual titles at the American Athletic Conference Championships and set a new record in the 5,000-meter race.
The NCAA Championship also marks the finale of Fernandez's career as a Temple Owl. During her time, the now three-time All-American rewrote the Temple record books by setting six program records. Fernandez also stands as Temple's first cross-country All-American.
"Blanca has been such a positive and exciting part of our team the past three years," said coach Forde. "Coach Snyder and I hope our newcomers can follow up on the foundation she has laid for this program."
Fernandez will now shift her focus on qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio this summer as a representative of her native Spain.
"We hope today was a strong stepping stone for her in her pursuit of making the Olympic team for her country," said Coach Forde. "We can't thank her enough for what she has brought to the table for us and herself."
