Meet the #TUVB Newcomers

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball roster will feature three new faces for the 2016 season -- junior transfer Kyra Coundourides, sophomore transfer Iva Deak, and freshman Dana Westfield. Owls TV caught up with the three newcomers, check out that video: here!

An accomplished setter, Coundourides played her first two years at Virginia Tech. In two seasons at Virginia Tech, she played in 59 career matches, tallying 956 total assists, 304 digs, and 46 aces. She notched a career-high 30 assists in a match at Duke, and added a career-best four aces against Virginia. In two years, Coundourides tallied 20 or more assists in a match on 21 occasions, while also adding seven double-doubles. 

Originally from Brunswick, Ohio, Coundourides is a four-time All-Ohio honoree and earned First Team All-District honors all four years. She is a former PrepVolleyball Top-100 Senior Ace and earned Under Armour All-America Honorable Mention honors as a senior. On the club level, Coundourides competed for AVC and helped the team to a UVA National Championship Runner-Up and five appearances in the USA Volleyball Junior National Championships.

Deak is a middle blocker from Zagreb, Croatia, who transfered to Temple after a season with Iowa Western. There, she was a second-team All-Academic selection, playing in 42 matches, recording 324 total kills for 2.35 kills per set. Deak racked up a hitting percentage of .340, while leading the team with 116 total blocks, including 13 solo.

Before college, Deak was member of the Croation Junior National Team from 2012 through 2015.. She played for HAOK Mladost in Croatia, leading her 2014 team to a win at the Croatian National Championship and a second-place finish in 2015. In 2015, she also qualified with her team to the World Junior Volleyball Championship. 

Westfield is a 6-1 outside hitter from Champaign, Ill. A four-year letter winner for Champaign Central High School, Westfield was a three-time first team All-Area selection. She was a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 team as a junior and also earned honorable mention as a sophomore. As a senior, she was named the WCIA 3 Player of the Year.

As a club player, Westfield was a two-time All-Region selection and led her team to berths in the USAV National Tournament three years in a row.

Temple Volleyball opens the 2016 season, hosting the Temple Invitational on August 26 and 27.
