Five Gymnasts Earn NACGCW Scholastic All-American Status
9.1.16 | Women's Gymnastics
PHILADELPHIA – Five Temple women's gymnasts have been named National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) Scholastic All-Americans following the 2016 season. The NACGC honors these gymnasts for earning a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher in the 2015-16 academic year.
Four of the five Owls receiving the honor are returning to the team this year. Rolling in the highest GPA of the pack, Kelsey Miller posted a 4.0 in her freshman year as a therapeutic recreation major. The York, Pa. native saw exhibition action on beam last season.
Aya Mahgoub, currently a sophomore, spent her first semester with the Owls in the spring, garnering a 3.87 GPA as a pre-health information management major. Mahgoub was a strong contributor on vault in the 2016 season, posting a season-high score 9.8 on the event. She finished the season ranking eighth in the ECAC on vault with an RQS of 9.710.
Breahna Wiczkowski and Sophia Valeri are the final two returners to be tabbed NACGC Scholastic All-Americans. Wiczkwoski, a social work major, posted a GPA of 3.76 while competing in all 13 competitions as a freshman. Contributing heavily on bars and beam, Wiczkowski earned season-highs of 9.725 on bars and 9.7 on beam while collecting her first individual event title on bars at the West Chester quad meet on Jan. 29.
Valeri, who also specialized on bars for the Owls, posted a 3.51 GPA in her first year as an athletic training major. Hailing from Berlin, N.J., Valeri scored a season-high 9.625 on bars in her only appearance of the season to go on and take gold on the event at the Harriet Marranca Invitational on Feb. 28.
2016 team captain, Hannah Popper, is the only women's gymnastics graduate to earn the honor. Despite battling a knee injury all season, Popper posted a 3.88 GPA in her senior year as she finished out her degree in biology. Popper was also awarded the team's Owl Club Academic Award at the 2016 Temple Owls Celebration of Champions event. Throughout her career, Popper worked as a bars specialist and tallied a career-high score of 9.6 on the event in her junior season.
