Nash Saves Career High as Women’s Soccer Falls in Close 1-0 Battle Against Memphis
9.29.16 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer dropped a close 1-0 match against the Memphis Tigers in both teams' conference opener. The Owls drop to 3-8, 0-1 on the year as Memphis will go to 7-2-1, 1-0 on the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Nash finished the game with a career high 17 saves, the most from the Brick, N.J. native since the season opener against Drexel where she had 12.
As the rain steadily came down at the Temple Sports Complex, both teams struggled to find the net in the first half. Memphis had a few opportunities with 13 shots in the first, however Nash was excellent in net.
Into the second half, it took some time before the eventual game-winning goal was scored. Memphis had a chance during the 57th minute in front of the Temple net. Freshman Jessica Lisi took Nash one-on-one and was able to break left and drill the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
The Owls had a few chances as the final minutes of the game played out. Sophomore Sarah McGlinn took a hard shot inside the box, but senior goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel made a diving save to ensure the shutout.
Head coach Seamus O'Connor was very pleased with the Owls' performance today, especially Nash and the defense.
"I think [Jordan] played outstanding," O'Connor said. "A lot of it came down to the defense, too. There were a lot of shots from outside the box which I though Molly [Tobin], Emily [Keitel] and Elaine [Byerley] did a great job of restricting them to shots from outside the box."
Temple will be back in action on Sunday at the Temple Sports Complex for noon kickoff against Tulsa. The Owls join forces with the field hockey team to fight pediatric cancer as they pair with the Go4theGoal Foundation. Both teams will be wearing gold laces in order to spread awareness. The teams set a fundraising goal of $2,016 and are accepting donations. To donate, click here.
