Women's Basketball Looks for 10th Straight Win at Houston on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team will go for number 10 in a row on Wednesday night, playing at Houston at 8:00 p.m. in an American Athletic Conference road clash.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
Temple wraps up a two-game road trip at Houston, carrying a 13-3 overall record with a 4-0 mark in The American. The Owls are riding a nine-game win streak that began on December 10 with an 83-48 win at Villanova. 

Four Temple players average in double-figures in scoring, led by senior guard Feyonda Fitzgerald's 19.0 points and 7.2 assists per contest.  Junior Alliya Butts averages 15.8 points per game with a team-best 33 steals. Junior Tanaya Atkinson averages 13.3 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds a game, while Donnaizha Fountain (12.4 ppg, 7.9 rpg) contributes for the Owls on both ends of the floor. 

Senior Ruth Sherrill has come on strong since breaking into the starting line-up and averages 5.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Junior Khadijah Berger averages 4.3 points and 2.9 boards per game, while senior Safiya Martin (2.0 ppg, 3.4 rpg) tops the team with 23 total blocks. 

Temple averages 72.6 points per game, giving up 60.2. The Owls shoot 40.0% from the field and 31.6% from long-range. Temple forces an average of 16.9 turnovers per game, and out-rebounds opponents by a +5.3 margin.

LAST TIME OUT
Temple extended its winning streak to nine games with a 58-49 victory on the road at Tulsa on Saturday afternoon. With the usually high-powered Temple offense held in check, the Owls had to rely on their defense to grab the victory. 

Temple forced 20 Tulsa turnovers on the afternoon, holding the Golden Hurricane to 35% (21-60) from the field and 16.7% (2-12) from three-point range.

Junior Donnaizha Fountain and senior Feyonda Fitzgerald accounted for the bulk of points for the Owls, as each tallied 19 points while combining for 11 rebounds. Junior Alliya Butts notched 13 points and three assists, while senior Ruth Sherrill led Temple on the glass with 12 rebounds. 

SCOUTING HOUSTON
Houston carries an 8-9 overall mark, including going 1-3 in The American.

Four players average 7.5 points per game or better for the Cougars, led by Chyanne Butler who contributes 10.4 points and 3.1 assists per outing. Jasmyne Harris averages 10.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, while Angela Harris averaged 9.0 points. Kierra Graves (8.5 ppg) and Serithia Hawkins (7.5 ppg) also aid the Houston offense, with Hawkins leading the Cougars on the glass, pulling down 7.6 boards per game.

The Cougars shot 38.5% from the field and 27.8% from long-range, scoring 63.0 points per game. Houston has a slim rebounding margin on its opponents, while averaging 9.4 steals per game.

LAST TIME OUT
Houston dropped an 82-56 game on the road at Tulane on Saturday. The hosts opened with a 17-7 lead before Houston cut it to 24-20 late in the second quarter. From there, Tulane used an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach for Houston. 

Angela Harris led the Cougars with 15 points, while junior Chyanne Butler added nine and Jasmyne Harris scored eight. On the glass,  Brianne Coffman pulled down a career-high nine rebounds.

Temple owns the all-time series against Houston, 6-0, all regular-season conference games.

LAST TIME THEY MET: February 12, 2016 - Temple 78, Houston 48
Temple grabbed a 30-point win (78-48) over Houston at McGonigle Hall. The Owls notched a buzzer-to-buzzer victory, as the stingy Temple defense allowed just 15 first half points, a season-best. Overall, Temple forced 23 turnovers from Houston, while racking up 12 steals.   

Tanaya Atkinson and Donnaizha Fountain both had career games in the lopsided victory. Atkinson finished with 27 points, topping her career mark, while adding seven rebounds and three steals. Fountain bested her career highs in two categories, recording 20 points and 15 rebounds, for her second career double-double. Alliya Butts had 11 points and two steals, while Feyonda Fitzgerald had eight assists with four points and four steals. 

Jessieka Palmer led the Houston scoring with 13 points, while Serithia Hawkins (10 pts) and Mariah Mitchell (8 pts) rounded out the Cougars' scoring.
