Women's Basketball Tops Tulane for Seventh-Straight; Atkinson Nets 1,000th Point

1.8.17 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team won its seventh-straight game, downing visiting Tulane, 86-71, at McGonigle Hall on Sunday night. Both teams entered the contest receiving votes in the USA Today national poll, but it was the Owls who grabbed their 11th win of the season, improving to 11-3 overall, 2-0 in conference play. Tulane falls to 10-6, 1-2 in The American.

Three players reached the 20-point mark for the Owls, including junior Tanaya Atkinson, whose 21 points included the 1,000th of her career. Junior Alliya Butts tied for team-high honors with 21 points, while senior Feyonda Fitzgerald tallied her fourth-straight double-double with 20 points and a career-high 13 assists.?Senior Ruth Sherrill also grabbed a double-double, posting 10 points and a game-high 10 boards, while Atkinson added eight rebounds. Junior Khadijah Berger chipped in with seven points and senior Safiya Martin picked up five points with seven rebounds.

Temple jumped out to a 21-7 advantage after the first quarter and worked around hot three-point shooting from the Green Wave in the second half to seal the victory. Both teams shot over 50% in the final two quarters, but Temple finished with the final shooting edge, 48.5% (32-66) to 41.4% (29-70). The Owls also held a 43-34 advantage on the boards, the ninth time this season that the cherry and white have out-rebounded their opponent.

Tulane struck first, but Temple rattled off eight unanswered points to take an 8-2 lead early in the action. Tulane cut the Temple lead to three on two occasions, but the Owls rolled down final minutes of the frame, closing the first quarter with an 11-0 run.

Tulane closed the gap to 22-14 with a 7-0 surge to start the second, but Temple pushed it to 33-18 after a Sherrill bucket punctuated an 11-4 Owl run. Temple's lead increased to 16, before a Vorpahl three made it 37-24 with 1:18 to play. Berger then countered with a three for the Owls, but Vorpahl nailed a jumper to close the second-half scoring, as Temple led 40-26 at the break.

Fitzgerald led the Owls with nine points and eight assists at the half, while Atkinson had eight points and five rebounds. Tulane's Vorpahl had 13 first-half points for the Green Wave.

A 46.7% (7-15) shooting line for Tulane in the third quarter closed the margin to single digits, as a Kolby Morgan three capped a 12-5 Green Wave run that made it 36-45 with 4:28 on the clock. Temple, however, responded with a 12-2 surge that push the lead to its largest of the game -- a 19-point advantage. A Tulane three at the buzzer set the score to 43-59 after three quarters.

Tulane shot 57.9% (11-19) in the fourth quarter, but Temple was even hotter, making 10-of-16 (62.5%) field goals to stave off any hopes of a Green Wave comeback.

Morgan led all scorers with 23 points, while Vorpahl finished with 19 points for Tulane in the loss.
