Women's Basketball Wins Big in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season with a lopsided 96-72 victory over visiting Delaware State University on Friday night at McGonigle Hall. A pair of double-doubles paced the Owls' potent offense, as senior Tanaya Atkinson (23 points, 13 rebounds) and freshman Mia Davis (21 points, 17 rebounds) helped dispatch the Hornets. 

KEYS TO THE GAME
> Temple shot 45.9% from the field, holding Delaware State to 34.7%.
> The Owls out-rebounded the Hornets, 54-39, including 36-23 on defensive boards.
> Temple took advantage of mismatches down low, racking up 44 points in the paint.
> The Owls led buzzer-to-buzzer using significant runs in the first and third quarters to earn the victory.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
> Atkinson's double-double was the 15th of her career, as she went 6-for-9 from the field and 11-for-12 from the line. 
> Davis earned a double-double in her first collegiate game, pulling down a game-high nine offensive boards.
> Senior Khadijah Berger hit career highs with 14 points and seven assists.
> Freshman Emani Mayo had a near flawless stat line, going 4-for-4 from the field with 10 points and a pair of assists without a turnover.
> Freshman Breanna Perry had nine points, seven rebounds and a game-best four blocks.
> Freshman Desiree Oliver had six points and six assists with five boards.
> Rounding out the box score, junior Lena Niang had five points and grad student Mykia Jones added three.

FIRST QUARTER
> Temple scored the first six points of the game and went up 8-2 on back-to-back Davis lay-ups.
> Delaware State scored three-straight to cut the lead to 12-9. 
> Temple went on a 16-2 surge, punctuated by a pair of threes from Oliver to lead 28-13 after one.

SECOND QUARTER
> The Hornets got some back in the second, out-scoring the Owls 25-21.
> Temple increased the lead to 39-22 on a Mayo three, but DSU cut the advantage to 10 with a 9-3 run.
> Berger scored the final six points of the frame for the Owls setting the half time score to 49-38.

THIRD QUARTER
> The senior duo of Atkinson and Berger combined for 18 points as Temple outscored DSU, 24-14.
> Berger scored the first six points of the frame, and Atkinson the next 10 for the Owls.
> Davis added back-to-back buckets late in the quarter, as the Owls went on an 18-2 run to lead 73-50.

FOURTH QUARTER
> Temple opened the fourth quarter with a 17-4 run to take their largest lead of the game, 90-59.
> Delaware State took advantage of Temple emptying its bench, going on an 11-2 run.
> The Owls' lead was more than enough to hold up, as Temple closed out the 96-72 victory.
