Women's Basketball Hosts Rutgers on Monday Night

PHILADELPHIA -- The 1-0 Temple women's basketball team continues its 2017-18 campaign on Monday, hosting Rutgers (1-0) at 7:00 p.m. at McGonigle Hall. ESPN3 will carry the game with Dave Leno (pbp) and Julianne Vianni (analyst) on the call. 

SCOUTING TEMPLE
> Temple finished 24-8 a year ago, earning a national ranking, and a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
> The Owls were 13-3 in the tough American Athletic Conference, finishing second to UConn.
> Temple returns four players who made starts last season, but will be without its five regular starters from a year ago.

RETURNERS
> Back to lead the Owls are seniors Tanaya Atkinson and Khadijah Berger, as Alliya Butts will miss the season due to injury.
> Atkinson was the American Athletic Conference Sixth Player of the Year, averaging 13.0 points and a team-high 8.7 rebounds per game.
> Berger buried 37 three last season.
> Sophomores Shantay Taylor (1.9 ppg, 2.1 rpg) and Shannen Atkinson (0.7 ppg, 1.6 rpg) each started one game last season.

NEWCOMERS
> Temple has seven newcomers, six of which are freshmen.
> Graduate transfer Mykia Jones (Georgetown) brings experience to the point guard position.
> Freshmen guards include Desiree Oliver, Emani Mayo, Nicolette Mayo, and Breanna Perry.
> Rookie forwards include Mia Davis and Tajae Stevenson.
> Lena Niang, a guard who transferred from NC State, will also be able to suit up in cherry and white this season.
> Davis led the Owls in scoring and rebounding on the team's Europe trip, while Oliver (9.0 ppg) and Jones (8.3 ppg) also aided the offense.

SEASON OPENER: W, 96-72 vs. Delaware State 
> Temple opened the 2017-18 season with a lopsided 96-72 victory over visiting Delaware State on Friday night.
> A pair of double-doubles paced the Owls' potent offense, as senior Tanaya Atkinson (23 points, 13 rebounds) and freshman Mia Davis (21 points, 17 rebounds) helped dispatch the Hornets. 
> Temple shot 45.9% from the field, holding Delaware State to 34.7%.
> The Owls out-rebounded the Hornets, 54-39, and racked up 44 points in the paint.
> Temple senior Khadijah Berger added career bests of 14 points and seven assists in the win.

SCOUTING RUTGERS
> Rutgers finished just 6-24 last season, 3-13 in conference play, but dealt with several key injuries.
> The Scarlet Knights are coached by Hall of Famer, C. Vivian Stringer, who is nearing 1,000 career wins.
> One of the key players who was out last season due to injury is redshirt senior and 2016 All Big Ten selection, Tyler Scaife, who is back for this season.

SEASON OPENER - W, 76-63 at JMU
> Rutgers opened the 2017-18 season with a 76-63 victory at James Madison.
> The Scarlet Knights grabbed the lead at 11-10.
> Rutgers, who led by as many as 21, needed to hold off a late JMU rally that made it just a two point game.
> Scaife, making her return to the court, led all players with 26 points.
> Caitlin Jenkins finished with nine points and 14 rebounds.
> Jazlynd Rollins added 10 points in the win.

THE MATCH-UP
> Rutgers has a commanding lead in the all-time series with Temple,
winning 39 of the squads' 51 meetings.
> Temple snapped a string of six Rutgers wins in a row with a victory over the Scarlet Knights last season.
> The Owls and the Scarlet Knights were conference foes in both the
Atlantic-10 and American Athletic Conference, before Rutgers moved to the Big Ten at the start of the 2014-15 season.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Temple 48, Rutgers 37 (12/17/16 at Rutgers)
> Temple allowed Rutgers just 11 points in the final 20 minutes, as the Owls grabbed a 48-37 road win over the Scarlet Knights.
