11.14.17 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - The best is being saved for last this week as Temple men's basketball will be the final team in NCAA Division I to start its 2017-18 season when the Owls tip-off against Old Dominion on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 1:30 p.m. (ESPN3 / 1210 AM WPHT). The game is the first for the Owls in the Gildan Charleston Classic, an eight-team tournament being held at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. on Nov. 16, 17 and 19.

Scouting Temple
> The Owls are 95-26 all-time in season openers, and have won eight of their last nine including an OT win vs. La Salle last year.
> Temple hosted Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) in a charity exhibition on Nov. 9, with all ticket sales donated to One America Appeal to benefit those impacted by the recent hurricanes that hit Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.
> The Owls defeated Jefferson 70-60 behind four players who scored in double figures. Leading the way were sophomores Alani Moore II and Quinton Rose with 13 points apiece, while senior Obi Enechionyia added 12.
> Temple's matchup against Old Dominion at the Gildan Charleston Classic is its first regular season game of 2017-18. The Owls will play a total of six games on the road before their home opener vs. Wisconsin on Dec. 6.
> Back this year for the Owls is redshirt senior guard Josh Brown who played in just five early games last year and ultimately took a redshirt season due to an Achilles tendon injury suffered in May, 2016. Brown ranked second in the American Athletic Conference with 4.9 assists per game and first with an assist/turnover ratio of 3.5 as a junior in 2015-16.
> Filling in for Brown at point guard last season was leading scorer Shizz Alston, Jr., who averaged 13.9 ppg. Alston, who had a free-throw percentage of .868 to lead the league last year, has made 28 straight free throws dating back to Temple's league opener vs. Cincinnati on Dec. 28, 2016.
> Quinton Rose (10.1 ppg/4.1 rpg) was named to the 2016-17 American Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team.
> Brown and Enechionyia have been named Temple's team captains for the 2017-18 season.

Scouting Old Dominion
> Old Dominion is 2-0 already in 2017-18 with a 57-54 home win vs. Towson and a 69-53 road win at James Madison.
> The Monarchs have been led by redshirt junior guard B.J. Stith in both games. He is averaging 17 ppg and scored 19 at JMU.
> Old Dominion returns three starters from last year's 19-12 team, including junior guard and Preseason All-Conference USA selection Ahmad Carver (13.0 ppg/3.5 rpg).
> Also back for the Monarchs is leading rebounder, redshirt senior forward Brandan Stith (7.0 rpg/9.9 ppg). Younger brother B.J., also a starter last season, averaged 10.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg.
> ODU was picked fourth of 14 teams in the 2017-18 C-USA Preseason Poll.
