Men's Soccer's Jokinen and Doerner Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer's Joonas Jokinen and Hermann Doerner have been named First Team All-District selections by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Jokinen is a four-year starter for Temple.  The senior was selected to the American Athletic Conference 2017 preseason All-Conference team. This season, Jokinen appeared in 16 games for the Owls, starting in 15. He contributed four goals and one assist, tallying nine total points. On Nov. 4, he scored the lone game-winning goal in the 1-0 victory over USF to advance the Owls to the American Athletic Conference Semifinals.

On the academic side, Jokinen is a sport and recreation management major with a 3.91 grade point average in the School of Sport Tourism and Hospitality Management. He was named the 2016-2017 American Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winner for his efforts both on the field and in the classroom. In 2016, he was selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team and has helped the Owls to three consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Awards.

Doerner is a three-year starter for the Owls. In 2017, the junior and co-captain appeared in 18 games, starting in 17. The Bad Neuheim, Germany native tied for most assists on the year with three and contributed two goals, including the game winner in the Owls' 2-1 victory against conference foe Cincinnati.

In the classroom, Doerner is an International Business major with a 3.92 grade point average within the University's highly regarded Fox School of Business. The junior has helped Temple men's soccer to two consecutive NSCAA Team Academic awards and has made the Director's Honor Roll for having a GPA over 3.0.

Jokinen and Doerner are two of 11 men's soccer players selected to the District 2 first team, which includes institutions in D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Both are now under consideration for the CoSIDA Academic All-American team.

CoSIDA's Academic All-America program began in 1952 and currently sponsors programs for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country, as well as student-athletes who compete in other sports through the At-Large program.  Among the criteria for nomination, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
