Men's Basketball Heads to Georgia for Friday Afternoon Contest

12.20.17 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - In its last game before the holiday break and starting conference play, Temple men's basketball heads to SEC foe Georgia for a 1 p.m. game on Friday, Dec. 22 (SEC Network / 1210 AM WPHT). The Owls (7-3) and the Bulldogs (8-2) are meeting for the first time in four years.

Scouting Temple
> The Owls split city rival games last week, falling to #1/1 Villanova but rebounding for a close win vs. Drexel. Sophomore guard Quinton Rose scored a career-high 27 points in front of a capacity crowd at the Liacouras Center in the loss to the Wildcats, while junior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. scored 12 points to lead six players with eight or more points vs. Drexel.
> The Owls stand at No. 10 in the NCAA Division I RPI, ranking as the best team in the American Athletic Conference.
> Rose leads Temple with 17.0 points per game, ranking sixth in the AAC, with Alston behind him in 10th place (16.0 ppg). Either Rose or Alston have led or tied for the team lead in scoring in all 10 of Temple's games in 2017-18.
> Alston set a program record for consecutive free throws made with 52 in a row from Dec. 28, 2016 to Dec. 6, 2017. He has made 29 of 30 free throws this season and leads the American Athletic Conference while ranking third in NCAA Division I with a free-throw percentage of .967.
> Temple has posted four wins over Power 5 Conference foes during this season with victories over Auburn, Clemson, South Carolina and Wisconsin. This ties for the most non-conference regular season wins against Power 5 schools.

Scouting Georgia
> The Bulldogs are off to a strong start at 8-2, and are undefeated at home so far this season with a 5-0 record. Georgia's 8-2 start is its best since 2010-11 when the Bulldogs earned an NCAA Tournament berth. They have done so once since then as well, in 2014-15.
> On Dec. 19, Georgia took down Georgia Tech by a score of 80-59 behind a game-high 24 points from senior forward Yante Maten.
> Maten, the SEC Preseason Player of the Year, is the Bulldogs' leader in both scoring (19.2 ppg, 3rd in the SEC) and rebounding (9.0 rpg, 2nd in the SEC).
> Georgia finished at 19-15 overall in 2016-17, falling to Belmont in the NIT First Round to conclude its season.

Series History
> Temple leads Georgia 2-1 in an all-time series that spans 31 years.
> The Bulldogs' lone win came in the first meeting, a 73-60 decision in Athens on March 11, 1982.
> As the #21 team in the nation on Nov. 26, 2011, the Owls beat the Bulldogs 65-58 in Orlando at the Old Spice Classic.
> Most recently, the two teams faced off on Nov. 22, 2013 at the Charleston Classic, with Temple winning 83-81.
