Doerner and Jokinen Named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team

12.4.17 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Hermann Doerner and senior Joonas Jokinen of Temple men's soccer have been named to the 2017 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Soccer Team. Doerner and Jokinen are two of 11 student-athletes earning Academic All-Area honors. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of 30 institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

In 2017, Doerner appeared in 18 games, starting in 17. The junior and co-captain tied for most assists on the year with three and contributed two goals, including the game winner in the Owls' 2-1 victory against conference foe Cincinnati. In November, Doerner was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. Additionally, he has helped Temple men's soccer to two consecutive NSCAA Team Academic awards and has made the Director's Honor Roll for having a GPA over 3.0.

This season, Jokinen appeared in 16 games for the Owls, starting in 15. He contributed four goals and one assist, tallying nine total points. On Nov. 4, he scored the lone game-winning goal in the 1-0 victory over USF to advance the Owls to the American Athletic Conference Semifinals. He is now a two-time Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area selection. Like Doerner, Jokinen was named a CoSIDA First Team All-District selection in November. Last year, the senior was named the 2016-2017 American Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winner for his efforts both on the field and in the classroom.
