PHILADELPHIA - On Dec. 7, Temple men's soccer senior Joonas Jokinen was named an Academic All-America Division I men's soccer second team selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Jokinen is the 27th Temple student-athlete to receive Academic All-America honors and just the third from the men's soccer program.
In November, Jokinen was one of 11 student-athletes to receive First Team All-District honors from CoSIDA. He was then selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Academic All-Area Team among 11 of the most outstanding academic and athletic performers in the greater Philadelphia area.
Jokinen is a four-year starter for Temple. The senior was selected to the American Athletic Conference 2017 Preseason All-Conference team prior to the start of the season. In 2017, Jokinen appeared in 16 games for the Owls, starting in 15. He contributed four goals and one assist, tallying nine total points. On Nov. 4, he scored the lone game-winning goal in the 1-0 victory over USF to advance the Owls to the American Athletic Conference Semifinals.
On the academic side, Jokinen is a sport and recreation management major with a 3.91 grade point average in the School of Sport Tourism and Hospitality Management. He was named the 2016-217 American Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winner for his efforts both on the field and in the classroom. In 2016, he was selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team and has helped the Owls to three consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Awards.
Twenty-six of the 34 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I men's soccer teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 15 student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA. The 11 members of the second team have an average GPA of 3.97.
CoSIDA's Academic All-America program began in 1952 and currently sponsors programs for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country, as well as student-athletes who compete in other sports through the At-Large program. Among the criteria for nomination, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
