DENVER - In its 2017 BIG EAST Conference opener, Temple lacrosse had its five-game win streak snapped at No. 14 Denver in a 14-6 loss on Sunday afternoon. The Owls (7-2, 0-1) came within two goals late in the first half, but were outscored 8-2 the rest of the way by the nationally ranked Pioneers (7-1, 1-0).
Temple had its chances in the second half with a yellow card on Denver and a number of free-position opportunities, but was only able to get two shots to go. The Pioneers scored four goals to lead 11-4 before the Owls scored two of the game's final five goals.
Junior Nicole Barretta led Temple with three total points, adding an assist to a pair of goals. Freshman goalkeeper Maryn Lowell played just under 50 minutes in the cage, making nine saves. Junior Nicole Latgis and freshman Kimmy Weinstock tied for team-high honors with three draw controls each, with Latgis adding a team-best three caused turnovers.
The Owls got on the board first with an Anna Frederick goal on a Brooke Williams assist at 24:37, but Denver answered quickly.
The Pioneers' Layne Voorhees controlled the draw and scored just 10 seconds after Temple did, starting what became a 6-0 run for Denver. The final goal of the run with 16:25 left in the first half gave the Pioneers a 6-1 lead, but the Owls then held them scoreless until the final seconds of the period.
Temple scored three straight over a 12 minute span to cut the Pioneers' lead to two. McDermott got things going on a Barretta assist just past the 15-minute mark. With 12 minutes to go, Meghan Hoffman sent a long pass into Kira Gensler who spun around and scored for the Owls' third goal. Barretta got a goal of her own to end the run with three minutes left in the half.
It looked as though the two-goal deficit would stand through the break, but Denver added one more with 11 seconds to go, giving the Pioneers a 7-4 lead at halftime.
Both teams had six draw controls in the opening half, but Denver finished with a 16-11 lead in total shots.
Lowell made four of her saves to keep the Pioneers scoreless in the first seven minutes of the second half, but once Denver got going, it became a 4-0 run over a 10-minute stretch.
Trailing 11-4, Barretta stopped the bleeding with 6:25 remaining. Denver then added another one before Carly Demato scored on an Olivia Thompson assist with four minutes to go. That was the final goal for the Owls, and the Pioneers scored the last two goals of the contest in the final minute and a half.
Temple will host Marquette in its home BIG EAST opener, with that game set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 25.
