Todd Selected as Bar Specialist for NCAA Regionals

3.20.17 | Women's Gymnastics

INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – For the first time since 2009, the NCAA has announced that a Temple women's gymnastics member will be represented at NCAA Regionals. Freshman Daisy Todd was selected as the second uneven bar specialist to compete at the Morgantown Regional at West Virginia University. Todd becomes just the eighth Owl of all time to qualify for Regionals and the second to qualify as a single event specialist. The Owls were also awarded two alternates with Todd heading to West Virginia as the all-around alternate and Aya Mahgoub has been selected as an alternate on vault.

"This is definitely exciting and it's showing the growth of this program," said head coach Umme Salim-Beasley. "Our level of gymnastics is increasing and having our gymnasts qualify to NCAA Regionals is definitely something that we plan on having happen in years to come. It showed a tremendous amount of consistency on Daisy's part to earn that second spot as a bar specialist."

Former ECAC all-around champion and current program all-around record holder Katie Canning was the last Owl to earn a spot at an NCAA Regional competition. Canning was selected as an all-around gymnast and posted a 38.125. Prior to Canning, Alexis Zafferes was selected as a vault specialist in 2005 where she posted a 9.125 and ranked 41st overall.

Todd, who was just named ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year, had her best meet of the season at Saturday's ECAC Championships when she posted a 39.025 to take second in the all-around. The score stands as the third-highest individual all-around score in program history, tied with Adrienne Carver who was a two-time NCAA Regional qualifier in 1996 and 1997. This season, Todd has posted five individual all-around scores that sit within the program's top-10 list.

"It will definitely be different without the rest of the team there," said Todd. "But I am very excited that my hard work this season has paid off and I'll be able to represent Temple on a bigger stage."

On bars alone, the San Jose, Cal. native finished the season with a conference-leading 9.820 RQS and the highest average of all ECAC bar workers (9.752). She finished the regular season with a season-high of 9.825 that she tallied five times throughout her debut season. For her efforts, Todd was able to collect two individual event titles on the event as well.

A three-time ECAC Rookie of the Week and Gymnast of the Week for the week of Feb. 7, Todd has played a transformative role in the Owls' historic season. With the help of Todd's all-around efforts, the 2017 team has posted the top ten team scores in program history, sharing only one of those scores with a previous Temple squad. They finished out the season with an RQS of 194.155, an improvement of nearly two full points from 2016 and four full points from 2015.

Todd's NCAA Regional performance will take place on April 1 inside the West Virginia Coliseum. To advance to the NCAA Semifinals, Todd will need to place first within her Regional pool of bar competitors. For more information on the 2017 NCAA Regionals, click here
