Women's Basketball to Meet USF in Tournament Semifinals

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- The #25/21 Temple women's basketball team is set for the semifinals of the Frontier Communications American Athletic Conference Tournament. The second-seeded Owls will face third-seeded USF at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
HOW TEMPLE ADVANCED
Temple (24-6) grabbed a 67-58 victory over Houston in Saturday's third quarterfinal, backed by 30 points and seven assists from senior Feyonda Fitzgerald. The 30 points established a new conference tournament scoring record in The American. Fitzgerald and juniors Alliya Butts and Tanaya Atkinson combined for all but two of Temple's 67 points, as Butts finished with 19 points, and Atkinson had 16. Fitzgerald rounded out her night with a game-best seven assists, while Butts had two steals. Atkinson ended with a double-double, also pulling down 12 rebounds.
Though Temple's guards accounted for night's scoring, seniors Ruth Sherrill and Safiya Martin each played major roles in the victory. Sherrill pulled down a game-best 15 rebounds, helping Temple to a 40-33 advantage on the glass. Martin added seven rebounds, tying a season high with four blocks.Â
HOW USF ADVANCED
USF (23-7) grabbed a dramatic 62-55 victory over SMU in Saturday's final quarterfinal. SMU led 45-39 lead with 8:49 to play, but a three from USF's Kitija Laksa with just over eight minutes left sparked a 19-10 run over the next seven minutes, giving them a five-point lead. USF pulled away down the stretch and finished off with a 62-55 victory.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The last time Temple and USF met, the #25 Owls grabbed a huge road win topping #22 USF, 77-71. Temple led by as many as 13 points, before USF rallied to take a 67-64 lead with 2:43 to play. From there, Fitzgerald and junior Donnaizha Fountain took over, as the pair combined to out-score the Bulls, 13-4, over the final two minutes of play, sealing the win for the Owls.Â
Temple out-shot USF, 40.6% to 37.5%, and turned the ball over a season-low five times. The Owls forced 12 steals from the Bulls, working around the 50-33 advantage that USF held on the glass.
Fitzgerald led Temple with 23 points and seven assists, while Fountain finished with 22 points and five rebounds. Junior Alliya Butts finished with 13 points and four assists, while classmate Tanaya Atkinson added 11 points with 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the year. Junior Khadijah Berger finished with six points and four rebounds to round out the box score.
