PHILADELPHIA -- A total of 78 Owl student-athletes from this academic year are now confirmed graduates, including 62 who participated in the 130th annual Commencement on Thursday. In all, more than 9,000 students graduated with the Temple University Class of 2017.
The 78 Owl student-athletes represent 18 of Temple's intercollegiate sports. Â Football has the most graduates with 16, followed by six each from women's lacrosse and women's track and field. Â
"?I am so proud of our student-athletes for this tremendous accomplishment," said Temple University Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "This group of men and women have continuously proven their dedication to excellence in competition and in the classroom. I know that the same drive and determination that made them successful as student-athletes will carry through to their professional endeavors."
Temple's class of 2017 has continuously raised the standard throughout their time in cherry and white. Since the first semester of their freshman year, the semester team GPA's have increased an average of an entire tenth of a point. They have combined for a 3.22 cumulative GPA, with their best effort coming this fall at 3.27.Â
The Owls' graduating class represents nine difference colleges in 34 majors and have maintained an average of 100 individual A's per semester. This is Temple's second-straight graduating class who, during their tenure, never saw the student-athlete population earn a semester GPA less than 3.0.
In celebration of the accomplishments of the graduating seniors, Temple Athletics held a toast for the student-athletes and their families prior to the 2017 Celebration of Champions. Each graduate was presented with a special student-athlete sash that was worn during the ceremonies.
