Fencing Hands Out Awards at Annual Year-End Banquet
5.3.17 | Women's Fencing
PHILADELPHIA -Â Temple fencing had a record-setting year in 2016-17, and the Owls celebrated all their successes at their annual banquet on Sunday, April 30. At the banquet, which was held in a private room at Dave & Buster's, Temple handed out some special awards and honored its seniors.
Three seniors finished their careers as Owls for the fencing program this season - Alexandra Keft, Kristen Kemnitzer and Victoria Suber.Â
Earning the Most Improved Award was one of those seniors, Kemnitzer, who fenced in 97 bouts this season and made her first-ever appearance at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional.
The team honored an MVP for each weapon, with one senior and two freshmen taking the awards. Keft, the overall team captain, was named MVP for the epee squad after a strong senior season that ended with a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Regional. Freshmen Malia Hee and Kennedy Lovelace earned MVP honors in sabre and foil, respectively, with both setting program records for single-season wins in their weapons.
Sophomore Quinn Duwelius earned the team's Owl Club Academic Award. Majoring in psychology, Duwelius has a GPA of 3.97 and was recently named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area At-Large Team.
Executive Senior Associate AD/SWA Mary McElroy spoke to the group at the banquet, which was also attended by 1977 alum Donna Lawrence Jones. All three seniors made tearful remarks, while their parents shared kind words and memories as well.
In total, 11 fencers were recognized for having above a 3.0 GPA in the fall. Six had above a 3.5 - Duwelius, Keft, Hee, Fiona Fong, Blessing Olaode and Olivia Wynn. All were honored again at the Celebration of Champions, held the same day as the fencing team's banquet.
