Six Temple Golfers to Compete at GAP Open
7.15.17 | Men's Golf
PHILADELPHIA - Six current members of the Temple University golf team will be competing at the Golf Association of Philadelphia's Open Championship. The two-day event will be held July 17-18 at the 6.976-yard, par-71 Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa.
The six current Temple golfers are senior Bobby Firth, redshirt junior John Barone, junior Gary McCabe, redshirt sophomore Erik Reisner, sophomore Marty McGuckin and transfer Liam McGrath.
For the first time in recent history (believed to be since 1940), the Open will be contested on multiple days. Competitors will complete 18 holes on consecutive days instead of the one-day, 36-hole format. Also new for 2017, an expanded field to 133 players, up from 78. There will be a cut after Round 1 to the low 60 players and ties.
The field includes exempt players entered and those who qualified at events held at Blue Bell Country Club June 21 and Radnor Valley Country Club June 27. It breaks down into 85 Association amateurs and 48 professionals.
An amateur has won seven straight Open titles with Temple golfers winning five straight years from 2011 to 2015. (Andrew Mason (2011-12), Brandon Matthews (2013, 2015) and Matt Teesdale (2014)).  Overall, amateur players have won 19 times.
Mason, a three-time all-conference performer during his Temple days (2007-11), will also be competing at The Open.
