PHILADELPHIA -- As part of Temple's #ProOwls series, this summer OwlSports.com will feature Q&A's with student-athletes who have stepped out into the work force, whether full-time or for a summer internship. We caught up with Evan Notaro, a recent graduate and member of Temple's Trustee Ten, who is working as Health & Benefits Generalist Intern for Aon, one of the largest insurance brokers in the world.

1.) What is your job title and what does it entail both day-to-day and long term?
My intern title is "Health & Benefits Generalist Intern." Since my title includes "generalist," you can probably assume that I deal with pretty much anything my co-workers need help with. I help my co-workers with tasks such as, request for proposals (RFPs), calculating fees, creating decks (PowerPoint slides), sitting in on phone calls and meetings, helping with some excel work to prepare for executive decisions, and working with websites that contain information on company benefit packages. In the long-term, I would eventually graduate from dealing with tasks that co-workers need help with and move on to managing my own clients, under the supervision of an Account Executive. In such a role, I would be working in a team setting and managing the account equally with co-workers.

2.) How has your major helped prepare you for your current role?
Fortunately, the Risk Management program is run extremely well at Temple University, which is tailored directly to the insurance workplace. From talking to co-workers, they are astonished that Temple provides a Risk program that is specifically designed for insurance. Luckily, my employee benefits course taught me a significant amount of the health and benefits knowledge I apply in the workplace today. However, applying this classroom knowledge can be difficult at first, because each company has its own unique issues that need to be dealt with. And unfortunately, with the lack of clarity on what will happen to the ACA, it only makes planning for the future more difficult.

3.) What are your favorite and maybe less favorite things about working for the summer?
My favorite aspect of working at Aon involves the connections. Everyone around me is extremely intelligent and motivated, which pushes me to work harder and learn as much as I can. Whether it be at lunch or happy hour, I enjoy seeing my co-workers and learning something new. My least favorite aspect about working is the longer hours. Being a student-athlete, we had a strict schedule and it consumed a lot of hours, BUT we were constantly moving around and changing scenery. In the workplace, this is usually not the case because you work long hours at a desk; most of which are working on a computer.

4.) What parts of being a Temple student-athlete are helping you now in your internship?
Because I was a student-athlete, I learned how to manage my time efficiently and disciplined myself to complete tasks. Now that I apply these same attributes in the workplace, I know how to prioritize time-sensitive tasks over others, which makes it easier for me to complete them before the deadline. I found that completing tasks before the deadline is important because if any changes need to be made, you have time to do it.

5.) What advice would you give your teammates about preparing for life in the "real world?"
My advice to fellow student-athletes would be: enjoy the college experience while you can. The "real world" can be a tough and competitive place, but really it's what you make of it. Moving from college to a job, you have a lot more autonomy than you may be used to, which can be good or bad, but YOU control your career. It boils down to the connections you make and what you make of it. No coach will be there telling you what you have to do, it's up to you.
