Volleyball Sweeps St. John's at Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Temple volleyball grabbed its second sweep of the season, topping St. John's on day two of the 2017 Desmond Hotel Invitational, hosted by the University at Albany. Temple won in straight sets, 25-22, 25-23, and 25-14 to move to 2-3 on the season.
Keys to the Match
> One match removed from a .045 hitting performance, the Owls' offense came alive, as the team combined to hit a season-high .288 for the match.
> Temple combined for 11 team blocks, holding St. John's to a .151 attack.
> In the first set, the lead changed hands four times before a 15-15 tie.
> SJU pulled in front 19-16 and later, 22-19, but from there it was all Temple.
> The Owls closed the first set with six-straight points, including three kills and a block from senior Janine Simmons, to seal the 25-22 win.
> The second set followed a similiar script, with the six lead changes before a 17-all tie.
> Temple took control with a 5-2 surge, backed by two kills from senior Irem Asci, to put the Owls up 21-19.
> St. John's cut the Temple lead to 24-23 late in the stretch, but a winner from senior Dara Peric gave the Owls set two, 25-23.
> Set three was all Temple, as the Owls hit .423, holding SJU to a .062 attack.
> The cherry and white won nine of the first 10 points, and later pushed the lead to 17-4 on a kill from redshirt freshman, Dana Westfield.
> St John's cut the lead back down to 10, but the Owls finished off the Red Storm, 25-14, on an Asci kill.
Individual Highlights
> Asci tallied a season-best 16 kills to go along with six digs.
> Rapacz finished with 11 kills, hitting .474, also tying a career-high with eight blocks.
> Senior Kyra Coundourides notched a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs.
> Westfield had seven kills and a pair of blocks.
> Simmons racked up five kills, shattering her career-high with eight blocks, including one solo.
> Peric had 11 digs and six kills.
> Junior Hannah Vandegrift notched 16 assists with five digs.
> Junior Mia Heirakuji led all players with a match-best 17 digs.
