Temple to Host UConn for First Conference Match of the Season

PHILADELPHIA – Coming off a 4-1 win over Duquesne on Tuesday, Sept. 19, Temple men's soccer (2-4-1) looks for its first conference win and first-ever win over UConn. The Owls will host the Huskies (2-2-2) at the Temple Sports Complex on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.

Promotions
>The Owls will be signing autographs at the end of the game. Fans are welcomed onto the track in front of the Temple Sports Complex bleachers for a signed poster from the team.

Scouting the Owls
> Against Duquesne, newcomer Thibault Candia scored his first two career goals to lead Temple to a 4-1 win. Other scoring contributors included sophomores Zach Brown and Lukas Fernandes.
> Other goal-scorers for Temple in 2017 are senior Joonas Jokinen (Saint Joseph's and Delaware) and redshirt senior Mark Grasela (Villanova).
> Redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex Cagle, who logged 52 saves in 2016, has collected 10 so far this fall. 

Scouting the Huskies
>The Huskies enter 2017 under 21-year head coach Ray Reid, having qualified for 18 of the past 20 NCAA Tournaments.
>Ranked No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, the Huskies were picked to finish first in the conference in AAC Preseason Polls. Junior captains Abdou Mbacke Thiam and Jacob Hauser-Ramsey, as well as redshirt junior Dylan Greenberg were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
>So far, Thiam is the Huskies' leading scorer. As a sophomore, Thiam started in 17 games for UConn, tallying 10 goals and four assists. This season he leads the squad with four goals.
>UConn closed out 2016 with an 11-7-1 record, 3-3-1 in the American Athletic Conference. The squad fell to Tulsa 2-0 in the American semifinals.
> On Sept. 16, the Huskies faced North Florida at home. After Thiam scored two goals in a row, UConn took a 2-0 lead into the half, but the Ospreys (1-3-1) tied the game during the next 45 minutes, resulting in a draw after two scoreless overtime periods.

The Series
>Since the first match in 2013, Temple has not beaten UConn. The Owls' record in the series is 0-5-1. In 2016, the Huskies topped Temple 1-0 at the Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.

Of Note
>Former Temple Owl Dan Scheck is currently in his second season as UConn men's soccer's Director of Quality Control. At Temple, Scheck was a goalkeeper from 2011-2014. As an Owl he tallied 198 saves with a goals against average of 1.03. He wrapped up his career at Temple third in career goals against average, ninth in career saves, and fourth in career wins (14).
