Men's Tennis Opens at Navy Invitational

Philadelphia-Temple's men's tennis team will start off its fall season Friday at the Navy invitational. It will be a three day event that will run from Friday Sept. 22 to Sunday Sept. 24.
 
Scouting the Owls
>Temple is coached by Steve Mauro who is in his 10th season at the helm of the program.
>The Owls finished last year's season with a 17-10 overall record with a perfect 10-0 record at home.
>The Owls will be looking for veteran leadership from senior Thomas Sevel and junior Uladmizir Dorash. Sevel posted a 17-6 overall record last year in singles play while Dorash was 14-4 last year in doubles play.
> The Owls also are expecting a big impact from returning sophomores Eric Biscoveanu and Francisco Bohorquez. Biscoveanu had a 10-10 record in singles play while Bohorquez finished 12-8 in singles play.
> Newcomers are expected to contribute immediately as well. Junior Ablerto Caceres Casas was a transfer from Armstrong and listed as No. 3 in the nation in Division II and sophomore Juan Araoz was a transfer from Hampton University where he was their number one player.
>The Owls also welcome the additions of freshman Michael Haelen and Mark Wallner as well as junior Stephen Ong.


Navy Invitational
>This is the third edition of the Joe Hunt Invitational.  Joe Hunt won (what became the) NCAA doubles title in 1938 while attending USC, transferred to Navy, won the NCAA singles title in 1941 and then won (what became the) U.S. Open singles title in 1943.  He lost his life in a training flight in 1945.
> Along with Temple Navy, Delaware, Monmouth, St. Bonaventure, George Washington, Mary Washington, Johns Hopkins, Liberty, George Mason, Christopher Newport.
>The format of the tournament is there will be six singles flights where everyone will play at least four matches) along with three doubles flights where everyone will play at least three matches.

>"We had a really good year last year, but we want to be a top 20 team in the country," said Temple head coach Steve Mauro. "We had close matches against top 20 teams last year and we can get to that point with some of the additions we bought to our team."

The men will be traveling to Tulsa, Okla. next weekend to play in the ITA All-American from Saturday Sept.30 to Tuesday Oct.2
