Volleyball Gets First American Win; Owls Sweep Memphis

9.24.17 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team used a 3-0 sweep to grab conference win number one of the season on Sunday. The Owls topped visiting Memphis, 25-17, 25-16, 25-15 to even their record to 5-5 overall, 1-1 in American Athletic Conference play.

KEYS TO THE MATCH
> Temple held Memphis to a negative attack, as the Tigers finished with 21 kills and 23 errors to hit -.018.
> The Owls' offense meanwhile, hit a robust .263.
> Temple got one point better in each set, holding Memphis to 17 in the first, 16 in the second, and 15 in the third.
> As a team, the Owls combined for 11 blocks, while also out-digging the Tigers, 64-46.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
> Senior Kyra Coundourides tallied a double-double with 38 assists and 17 digs.
> Senior Irem Asci also finished with a double-double, notching 11 kills and 13 digs.
> Senior Izzy Rapacz had 10 kills, hitting .350, also adding a match-best six blocks.
> Junior Iva Deak finished with eight kills and five blocks, making just one error to hit .467.
> Senior Dara Peric had five kills and nine digs.
> Senior Janine Simmons finished with four kills and three blocks.
> Junior Mia Heirakuji tallied a match-high 18 digs.

SET ONE: Temple 25-17
> The Owls jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first, but Memphis used a 7-3 run to cut the lead to 12-10.
> Memphis kept things close for the next few points, making as the score creeped up to 15-12.
> From there, it was all Temple, as the Owls won 10 of the next 15 points to win the set.

SET TWO: Temple 25-16
> Neither team led by more than three early in the frame.
> After a 10-10 tie midway through action, Temple went on a 7-0 surge that all but put things away.
> Leading 17-10, the Owls allowed Memphis to get the lead under five just once more.
> Temple then wrapped up the set on a block from junior Carla Guennewig and redshirt freshman Dana Westfield.

SET THREE: Temple 25-15
> Temple led 9-2 before a 5-0 Memphis surge made it a two-point set.
> The Owls gave themselves some breathing room with a 12-2 run to make it 19-9 Owls.
> Memphis rallied to cut the lead to seven at 22-15.
> Temple closed out the set and the match with kills from Deak and Coundourides and a Memphis error.

UP NEXT
> The Owls will play their first road conference series next weekend.
> Temple plays Friday at Tulane at 8:00 p.m.
> The Owls then wrap up the series on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Houston.
