Cross Country Heads to Notre Dame for Joe Piane Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's and women's cross country will hit the road this week to compete at the Joe Piane Invitational at Notre Dame. Both teams are coming off two straight team titles for the first time since 2005. Notre Dame will host 51 schools, including 42 men's teams (four ranked) and 47 women's teams (seven ranked). Temple will compete in the women's and men's gold races set to begin at 3:15 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
Scouting Men's Cross Country
> The Owls head into the Joe Piane Invitational ranked No. 9 in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The squad jumped from having been unranked to the No. 9 spot during the week of Sept. 18.
> Graduate student Marc Steinsberger was Temple's top finisher at the Rider Invitational on Sept. 15. He snatched the individual title in the men's 8K for the second year in a row. Steinsberger's win led the squad to its second-straight team win of the season.
> Steinsberger was also Temple's top finisher at the Temple Invitational, finishing in second place (26:10.6). Freshman Kristian Jensen followed in third (26:10.7), as the duo crossed the finish line arm in arm.
Scouting Women's Cross Country
> The women's team will enter Friday's race ranked No. 10 in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the USTFCCCA. For the week of Sept. 18, the Owls ranked No. 9.
> Sophomore Grace Moore was Temple's top finisher at the Rider Invitational on Sept. 15, completing the 6K in 22:04.72. Moore snagged the individual title in the event and led the Owls to their second-straight team win of 2017.
> At the Temple Invitational on Sept. 1, sophomore Millie Howard (22:08.1) placed second out of 34 participants, leading the Owls to a team title.
Scouting Notre Dame
> Irish women's cross country junior Annie Heffernan finished first at the National Catholic for the second straight season (Sept. 15). Heffernan finished with a 17:29.4 mark and led the Irish to first place as a team.
> The Irish men's team recorded the top five finishers at the Crusader Open on Sept. 1, recording their second straight perfect score at the meet.
> Freshman Yared Nuguse ran to first place with a time of 18:09.3 at the Crusader Open on Sept. 1. Nuguse was named ACC Freshman of the Week following his debut performance.
> The USTFCCCA's preseason poll featured the Notre Dame women's cross country team in the No. 8 spot in the country, the highest preseason ranking for the program since 2005.
