Hot Shooting Houston Tops Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- Visiting Houston shot a massive 57.7% from three, racking up a school record 15 makes from long range, as the Cougars topped Temple, 99-75, in American Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Tuesday night. The loss dips the Owls to 9-8 overall, 1-4 in conference play, while Houston, receiving votes in the latest USA Today Top 25 poll, improves to 15-5, 4-2.

KEYS TO THE GAME
> Temple shot nearly 50% from the field, but Houston's high octane offense finished at 36-68 (52.9%) for the game.
> Houston had a slim lead on the glass (35-33) but put up 15 second chance points to Temple's four.
> After the Cougars led by as many as 24 points in the third quarter, the Owls whittled it down by 12, until a final surge from Houston closed out the lopsided score.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
> Temple senior Tanaya Atkinson and freshman Mia Davis each scored 20 points in the loss. 
> Atkinson added five rebounds and four assists, while Davis pulled down six boards.
> Freshman Emani Mayo finished her night with 14 points and a pair of assists.
> Rookie Breanna Perry notched eight points and a team-best seven rebounds.
> Junior Lena Niang had six points, while senior Khadijah Berger added five assists.

FIRST QUARTER
> A fast paced first quarter opened with the teams trading scores to make it 10-10 early.
> Houston got hot from three, connecting on 8-of-12 from long range in the frame, sparking a 19-6 run that put the Cougars up 29-16.
> Temple slightly closed the gap with five straight to close the quarter trailing 29-21.

SECOND QUARTER
> Houston opened the second on a 13-5 run to open a 42-26 advantage with 5:42 on the clock.
> Temple got the lead down to 12 on a free throw from Atkinson, making it 49-37.
> The Cougars closed things out with a 9-4 run to take a 58-41 lead at the break.

THIRD QUARTER
> After Davis opened the third with a bucket for Temple, Houston put together a 13-4 surge to take its largest lead of the game, 24 points at 71-47.
> Temple got the advantage down to 16 on an Atkinson jumper, but Houston closed out the frame by scoring five of the final six points to make it 78-58 after three.

FOURTH QUARTER
> Temple mounted an impressive rally to start the fourth quarter, going on a 13-3 run to make it a 12 point game.
> However, on Houston's next possession, the Cougars tallied a conventional three point play, sparking a 14-2 run that closed out the game for the visitors.
