Offense Shines in Volleyball Sweep of Memphis

10.19.18 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA -- A hot-hitting Temple volleyball team swept visiting Memphis on Friday night at McGonigle Hall during the Owls' annual "Hawaiian Night." Temple won convincingly, 25-15, 25-21, 25-20, moving to 5-15 (2-6 AAC), while Memphis fell to 9-11 (2-6 AAC).

Keys to the Match
> Temple topped its season-best hitting performance by .038, hitting .318, holding Memphis to a .227 attack.
> Temple hit .375 in the first set, having little trouble with Memphis, who the Owls held to a .000 offense.
> The Cherry and White used a fantastic come-from-behind performance in the second, erasing a stellar .419 set (13-0-31) from the Tigers' offense, to take the all-important second frame.
> Temple then used an early run and held off a late Memphis charge in the third to record its first sweep of the season.

Individual Highlights
> The Owls got matching outstanding performances from its Turkish pin hitters, as the duo combined for 28 kills. Graduate student Irem Asci finished with 15 kills, hitting .438, while freshman Miray Bolukbasi tallied 13 kills, hitting .455.
> Graduate student Iva Deak tallied eight kills with just one error, also adding two blocks.
> Sophomore Baleigh Jean-Philippe finished with six kills, while junior Dana Westfield added four (without an error).
> Freshman Tyler Lindgren dished out 24 assists, while senior Hannah Vandegrift added eight.
> Temple's defensive specialists Mia Heirakuji and Averi Salvador, both from Hawaii, each picked up nine digs, while sophomore Katerina Papazoglou added seven. 

Set One: Temple 25, Memphis 15
> A hot start to the match saw Temple hit .375 in the first, holding Memphis to a .000 attack.
> Temple led 5-1 quickly and the lead grew to 10-3 on a kill from Jean-Philippe.
> Memphis couldn't get its offense running, as the Owls pushed it to 17-10, forcing the Tigers to use their final timeout.
> Temple then closed it out, winning the final point on a block from Papazoglou and Deak.

Set Two: Temple 25, Memphis 21
> Memphis hit lights out in the second set, going 13-0-31 (.491), but Temple rallied late to win it, 25-21.
> Temple trailed 13-8 before the Owls started slowly chipping away.
> A Deak ace cut it to 15-14, but Memphis pushed the lead back to 19-16.
> The Owls then came alive offensively, closing the set on a 9-2 run, ending with a Papazoglou ace.

Set Three: Temple 25, Memphis 20
> Temple used a big early run and held off a late Memphis charge to seal the sweep.
> Temple turn a 5-5 tie into a 17-6 lead with a huge 11-1 run, including a string of seven unanswered points.
> Memphis used late surge to get to within four, 24-20, but Temple closed out the victory.
