Hellgren Villegas Earns Multiple Weekly Honors

PHILADELPHIA – Freshman Elias Hellgren Villegas earned his first career honors from the American Athletic Conference this week, landing a spot on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll for his tremendous efforts against two extremely challenging opponents. Hellgren Villegas is the seventh Owl to earn conference recognition this season from the men's soccer squad. The freshman was also named Rookie of the Week by the Philadelphia Soccer Six.
Hellgren Villegas played a pivotal role in the Temple offense this past week, contributing five points in the two games Temple played. On Monday, he notched his first collegiate goal and added his second assist of the season against a talented ACC opponent at Pitt. As the clock ran down, the Owls created multiple threatening chances to come back against the Panthers, but were unable to capitalize to keep them in the game.
On Saturday night's AAC match-up at No. 13/20 UConn, Hellgren Villegas put Temple on the board first to send the Owls into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead over one of the nation's top teams. When Leandros Lillis found himself with the ball in the center of the field, he nutmegged his defender to send the ball through to Jalen Campbell. Campbell threaded his defenders to find fellow freshman Hellgren Villegas to the left of the box, who slid the ball past the UConn keeper's left side and into the net his second goal in as many games. A converted penalty kick and controversial 88th minute goal ultimately handed UConn the victory, but the score sheet did not truly represent the way Temple competed against the current conference leaders.
Up next, the squad is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 23 when they host Philadelphia Soccer Six rival, Penn. The local match-up is set to kick off at 7:00 p.m. at the Temple Sports Complex, and admission is free to all who attend.
