Casas and Wallner Compete in Doubles Final at ITA Atlantic Regionals; Fall to Penn State

10.22.18 | Men's Tennis

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Temple men's tennis duo of Alberto Caceres Casas and Mark Wallner competed in the doubles final at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships on Monday. The pair battled Penn State's tandem of Constant de la Bassetiere and Gabriel Nemeth, but ultimately fell 6-2, 6-0 to the Nittany Lions. Casas and Wallner had one of the best showings at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships in Temple history.

Notes
> The ITA Regional Championships featured the top men's players in the Atlantic Region and were hosted by Virginia Tech.
> En route to Monday's final, Casas and Wallner defeated some elite competition. In the round of 32, the Owls downed Virginia Tech's No. 22 pair of Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro. Casas and Wallner triumphed over Old Dominion's pair of Aziz Kijametovic and Francois Musitelli, the reigning ITA Atlantic Regional doubles champions, in Sunday's semifinal. They defeated the Monarchs 7-6(6), 3-6, 1-0 (7).

From Coach Mauro
> "I'm really proud of the way the team of Mark and Alberto played," said head coach Steve Mauro. "It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the fall and to make it to the finals is quite an accomplishment. On the way to the finals, they defeated the number 22 ranked team in the country [Virginia Tech] and the defending champions from Old Dominion. Unfortunately it did not go our way, but I think this was the furthest Temple has ever been in this tournament. It was a great effort and it shows well for our program."
